1. Foreword
This guide started off extremely shitty and stayed shitty for a very long time. However, I believe this guide should redeem my past mistakes and actually teach people how to play DK in the most effective way possible. Who would think that a guidewriter who recommends battlefury on DK can actually write a properly fixed guide? Well, guess we’ll find out.
2. Hero Overview
Base movespeed is 290.
Base STR is 19 + 2.8 per level.
Base AGI is 17 + 1.7 per level.
Base INT is 15 + 1.7 per level.
Base Damage is 46-52.
Base HP is 511.
Base Mana is 195.
Base Armor is 4.4
Attack Range is 125.
3. Taking a Closer Look
First off, let me get this clear: DK’s armor is just imba. With level 4 dragon blood, his armor is a whopping 12.4 without adding in additional armor gained from AGI (level up and additional stat points). This will tell you one thing: he is one beefy, tough dragon. DK is the type of hero who is a fearsome tank. He is probably one of the few heroes who can become a very tough powerhouse, dealing insane amounts of damage and being able to take brutal punishments at the same time. EDF level 3 turns him into a beast, making it foolish to ignore him and his awesome armor along with the fact that he’s a strength hero makes it hard to take him down.
So we know DK is a fearsome tank, but hey, doesn’t his early game suck at least? In a sense, yes, his early game is weak compared to what he can be late game. However, anyone who underestimates DK’s early game will be in for a huge surprise. Just pair DK up with another stunner and nuker, and you will never rest in peace with his extremely long stun and an AOE nuke that will burn your head off if you don’t play cautiously. Add in the fact that DK has the liberty to mass stats early game and still be potent, you’re dealing with an insane powerhouse who will shut you down if you don’t play carefully.
Many people think that because he has an AOE nuke, he should be played as a caster. While there will be many people fervently defending and screaming murder when I say this is the wrong way to play him, I will still say it; playing DK as a caster totally ignores his ability to become a beast and turns him into nothing but a fire breathing dragon who can only support. I’ve tried to advocate this with my previous guide and miserably failed, but this time, I hope I will succeed in bringing out the true colors of the dragon knight.
4. Hero Abilities

Breathe Fire - Breathes fire at enemy units which deals damage.
Level 1 - 75 damage.
Level 2 - 150 damage.
Level 3 - 225 damage.
Level 4 - 300 damage.
100 / 115 / 130 / 150 mana cost. 12 second cool down at all levels.
Your basic AOE nuke. The range is quite disappointing compared to other AOE nukes like carrion swarm, but consider it a blessing a strength hero like DK actually has an AOE nuke to toy with. Without this skill, you will barely have any lane control and killing power until late game.

Dragon Tail - Knight Davion bashes a melee-range enemy target with the fury of a dragon’s tail swipe. Stuns the target and deals minor damage.
Level 1 - Deals 25 damage, stuns for 2.5 seconds.
Level 2 - Deals 50 damage, stuns for 2.75 seconds.
Level 3 - Deals 75 damage, stuns for 3 seconds.
Level 4 - Deals 100 damage, stuns for 3.25 seconds.
100 mana cost and 9 second cool down at all levels.
Dragon tail is a single target melee stun that lasts quite a while and deals shitty damage. This skill levels up extremely shitty, but makes you extremely potent since you will be able to stun for over 3 seconds when this skill is maxed. The low cooldown also makes it awesome and fearsome. Pair this up with another stunner, and your target will die before he can even cry.

Dragon Blood - Grants Dragon Knight blood from his ancient ancestral dragon heritage, which increases health regeneration and armor.
Level 1 - Increases hp regen by 1 and armor by 2.
Level 2 - Increases hp regen by 1 and armor by 4.
Level 3 - Increases hp regen by 3 and armor by 6.
Level 4 - Increases hp regen by 4 and armor by 8.
Dragon blood is an extremely useful passive skill, not for the regen, but for the huge boost to armor. Many people, including me, thought of this skill as the best skill to get early game since a maxed out dragon blood gives you a free ROH. But early game is all about exchanging nukes, not dealing physical damage, making the armor boost unnecessary till mid game. Also, the regen is absolute shit compared to what you can get from a simple tango. Dragon blood early game gives you a slight benefit in exchanging physical blows but will not help you take in those painful nukes.

Elder Dragon Form - Transforms the Dragon Knight into a powerful elder dragon. Lasts 60 seconds.
Level 1 - Transforms into a Green Dragon with a corrosive breath attack.
Level 2 - Transforms into a Red Dragon with a splash attack.
Level 3 - Transforms into a Blue Dragon with an extremely powerful frost attack.
Green Dragon

Green dragon gives an additional 10 movement speed and corrosive breath, which deals 20 damage per second to towers.
Red Dragon

Red dragon gives an additional 35 movement speed, 5 base damage, and deals full splash damage.
Blue Dragon

Blue dragon gives an additional 60 movement speed, 14 base damage, and deals full splash damage with frost attack.
EDF lasts 60 seconds on all levels, and has a 135 second cool down on all levels. Contrary to popular belief, EDF does NOT add additional HP. Confirmed by experiment.
This is what turns you into a beast late game. EDF level 1 is pathetic, level 2 is good and level 3 is simply amazing. Who can pass up a skill that gives you range, a free skadi, and 2/3rds of a BOT?
1. Introduction to Build
Achieving this build is extremely hard and takes a lot of skill to accomplish. However, once you finish the first core item, everything will become extremely easy and will immediately push you up as a powerhouse in your game. This build will let you tear up almost anyone as you will deal lots of damage and be able to take the punishment your opponents will dish out.

3. Explanation for Skills
First off, level one dragon tail > level one breathe fire. The stun will be useful all through early game and mid game as it will land you kills and stop channeling spells. Only one level will be needed until late game when you actually need the additional stun time.
Breathe fire will give you something to farm with as well as kill in the early stages of the game. Not leveling breathe fire is foolish as you will be labeled weaksauce if you have nothing to defend yourself with nor fight with. This skill will grab you creep kills, hero kills, and allow you to be actually helpful early game with your stun.
Stats early game will make you even more beefier and boost your pathetic mana pool to allow more dragon tail and breathe fire usage. You absolutely need the stats in order to fully utilize your skills and take some nukes. The stats will be more useful in battles than dragon blood will be during early game.
EDF level 1 is complete shit. Stats will give you more than what EDF level 1 will. However, level 2 EDF has splash damage that you will need in case of an early push or a huge creep wave just waiting to be devoured by you. Some people make the mistake of getting EDF at 14-16, but that will leave you too weak against early pushes and team fights. Having a ranged splash attack is still very powerful compared to what other ranged heroes can do. EDF level 3 = GG. Being ranged and equipped with a splashing, slowing attack with a huge boost to your movement speed is one of the best things you can ever wish for. This skill is what makes you very unique: a ranged strength hero.
4. Core Items
- Ring of Basilius
This will be your only source of mana regen throughout the entire game. The fixed regen is all you need all game long if you play smart by not spamming your nuke frivolously. Not getting any sort of regen makes it hard to use your nukes, yet getting something big like a void stone will delay your build too much. I recommend against getting ROB as a first item, you’ll absolutely need tangos or ring of regeneration along with some branches. ROB will be the first item you get on your first trip back to the fountain along with some circlets.
- 3 circlets
I put these in as you’ll need them early game. From here on, the build branches off to either the main build or the secondary build. Complete 3 bracers if you need more HP against a difficult lane or if you’re getting ganked constantly. Otherwise, leave it at 3 circlets as you will now farm up for your next item which is…
- Radiance
your radiance. This will be the toughest stage of the game for you, and rightfully so as farming 3,800 gold as a melee strength hero is very hard. I know people are sick of seeing radiance in almost every guide, but it is the strongest item DK can ever get as it gives you immolation to farm as well as chase and since you’re melee, the immolation will always hit your opponents as you engage them. Radiance along with the frost attack EDF level 3 gives is a very strong combination. Heroes with no escape mechanism will drop fast as you will have a high damage output along with immolation. It also serves to draw fire as you are naturally the tank for your team. No one will ever ignore an ice breathing dragon, burning and slowing everyone as well as stunning and breathing fire and dealing obscene amounts of damage. Once you obtain your radiance, you will become a huge threat to your opponents.
- Heart of Tarrasque
HOT is the perfect item to get after radiance. It gives you a huge HP boost to go along with your insane armor and adds 35 damage to make you even more fearsome. Nothing ever beats HOT as an item to get after radiance. You will be hard to take down, and you will be screwing everything that gets in your way when you complete this after radiance.
- Boots of Travel
The perfect item to finish off your core build. It gives you map control as it lets you push, defend, and farm all around the map. The movement speed bonus along with EDF level 3 means that no one will ever escape your grasp (with the exception of few heroes). Treads may sound tempting as your attack speed is pathetic, but you will be better off with BOT as map control > IAS.
1. Introduction to Build
You will follow this build under several condition. 1) You absolutely cannot save 3,800 gold all at once for your radiance. 2) Someone else grabs a radiance. 3) You’re at a disadvantage where you simply cannot afford to farm all game. This is the inferior build that will only be taken if it’s impossible save up your gold and you need items to boost you right away. I highly recommend avoiding this build and going with the primary build if you can help it, but you will always have tough games where even saving up 1,000 gold is tough.

- 3 bracers
Remember the 3 circlets from the primary build? Well, those three circlets will become the three bracers. Remember, this build is for those hard to farm games and getting 3 bracers is the smartest way to go as they are cheap and very strong. The HP boost, mana boost, and damage boost are all beneficial to DK so get it when you’re having a tough game. If you’re somehow able to farm after getting three bracers, skip this alternative build and try to get your sacred relic. It’s never too late to try and farm for it. Otherwise, move on to the next item in this build.
- Boots of Travel
BOT gives you map control as it lets you push, defend, and farm all around the map. The movement speed bonus along with EDF level 3 and SnY means that no one will ever escape your grasp (with the exception of few heroes). You will rush BOT after the three bracers in order to help with your limited ganking and it let’s you teleport around the map to farm for your SnY, even possibly letting you farm a relic, letting you skip this alternative build and moving on to the main build. Treads may sound tempting as your attack speed is pathetic, but you will be better off with BOT as map control > IAS. Also, you will get your necessary attack speed from SnY, so treads are useless.
- Sange and Yasha
Yup, the poor man’s item. All of the pieces are small and easier to farm for, and they will give you consistent benefits all throughout the game. The maim along with your frost attack from EDF level 3 is very strong and the MS boost makes you even harder to escape from. The AGI and attack speed boost will boost your pathetic attack speed. Again, this is the inferior alternative build so please don’t say radiance > SnY because I agree with you.
- Heart of Tarrasque
Reasons for getting HOT are stated in the primary build. It will make you beefy along with your awesome armor, as well as giving you a decent damage boost.
5. Rejected Items
Manta Style
Manta style doesn’t work with EDF so don’t even bother with it.
Battlefury
Don’t be retarded like me and get this item. Radiance out performs this item by a huge margin and the regen offered is simply unnecessary. Your HP regen is taken care by dragon blood and mana regen can be solved by a simple ROB. Also, the splash damage only works when you’re in melee form, you already got your own splash damage when you use EDF.
Euls, Guinsoo
Euls and guinsoo gives too much mana and mana regeneration that you don’t need. Cyclone and hex are great, but there are better heroes suited for supporting. Also, stun, breathe fire, cyclone, stun, and breathe fire is only geared towards solo killing. With proper allies, all you have to do is land a stun, whack, and breathe fire. You’re better off boosting your damage and survivability and preparing for your late game.
Desolator
Desolator doesn’t work with EDF level 3’s frost attack. I forgot which one overrides which, but either way, retarded to waste one orb effect.
Skadi
I already feel retarded even mentioning this item in a rejected items list… it should be common sense that you avoid this item on DK.
Hand of Midas
You already have an AOE nuke to farm with, midas only pushes your relic rush and makes you vulnerable rushing it.

Alright, here’s the thing, what makes or breaks your early game is your lane partner. Don’t even dream of soloing because you are not designed to solo. You will feed and it will set you back more than help you so try and grab a lane partner even if he’s shitty. Anyone with a ranged stun or disable and a nuke will make a very powerful lane combo. So heroes like Rhasta, CM, and THD are the heroes you want to lane with. Now check who you’re against. Are they strong lane controllers like venomancer or viper? Or are they weak late gamers like PA or naix? Or perhaps they’re mediocre like obsidian? The second determinant of your early game success is your lane opponents. So I will outline some scenarios that will hopefully help you generalize and act accordingly.
#1. You grabbed the perfect lane partner, but your opponents are very strong. If this is the case, just play it safe. It will be an intense battle between who can grab the upper hand. It is crucial to make every move count. You can’t afford to mess up because one small mistake will make you die or send you to the fountain crying for help. Try your best to coordinate your attack. Have your ally initiate with their disable against your opponent who is easier to take out. When initiated, move up and take a few swings and stun when the initial disable is about to be over. Take one or two more pot shots and use breathe fire. You will want to do this at level 3, since your level 1 breathe fire is pathetic. If done correctly, you will have succeeded in killing or sending your target back to the fountain. Don’t get greedy and chase, if it’s a lost cause then immediately fall back. Sending them back to the fountain means more farming for you.
#2. You grabbed the perfect lane partner and your opponents are mediocre at best. In this case, you’ll want to be aggressive with your lane partner starting from level 3 onwards. You still have the weakness of being a melee hero, so scaring them and gaining the upper hand in the lane will let you farm easier and grab your lane mate and yourself some kills as well. As soon as you get your ROB, you can start scaring them off with your nuke. But don’t play TOO aggressive, know when to fall back and know when it’s not the right moment to engage, i.e. you guys are by their tower or their creeps are about to swarm you. In an equal situation, you will have the upper hand, but if you’re at a disadvantage, they will kill you.
#3. You grabbed the perfect lane partner and your opponents are shitty late gamers. Hah, the best case scenario. It’s basically the same as scenario #2, except you can be more aggressive and farm with ease. You will want your ROB ASAP so that you can spam your breathe fire a little more and constantly push them away from the lane to free farm and deny them experience. In this case, it is more important that you send them to the fountain or kill them as screwing their early game is very important.
#4. You grabbed a mediocre lane partner and your opponents are very strong. Just stay back and don’t move up for a creep kill. Use your breathe fire to farm so that you won’t get caught by their combo or harassed back to your fountain. Try to grab two creep kill every time you use your breathe fire. Breathe fire will be your only saving grace. Once you reach level 5, ask your teammates for a gank. You will need to farm and it will be impossible if they can instantly kill you or send you back to the fountain. When in superior numbers, your disable and AOE nuke will result in a successful gank and it will let you farm in your lane.
#5. You grabbed a mediocre lane partner and your opponents are mediocre as well. In this case, just try your best to farm with the occasional harassment with your breathe fire. Use your breathe fire to harass them and grab one or two creep kills at the same time. This way, you will gain gold and harass them, maximizing on your skill.
#6. You grabbed a mediocre lane partner and your opponents are shitty late gamers. Just do the same thing as scenario #5, except be a bit more aggressive than usual. Show them who’s boss by using your breathe fire occasionally and stunning them if they make mistakes.
#7. You grabbed a shitty lane partner or you’re forced to solo. What’s worse is you’re against stronger opponents. Just stay back and never move up. Just use your breathe fire to farm and call a gank on your lane. If you’re against someone equally shitty, then consider yourself lucky and try to farm a little as well as harassing with breathe fire.
In each of these situations, grabbing a ROB will greatly aid you, whether it’s harassing or farming with breathe fire. You may be a melee hero, but you’re beefy since you’re a strength hero and you have an AOE nuke to toy around with, as well as a long ass stun that will make it foolish to underestimate you. So don’t play too passively if you’re against weaker people, use your skills to your advantage and show them whose boss.
When you’re going for a kill, always make sure you have enough mana for a dragon tail and breathe fire combo. Moving up to stun and realizing you don’t have enough mana to finish the job might turn out to be horrendous and get you killed. When you’re using dragon breathe to farm or harass, make sure you grab at least one to two creep kills while hitting your opponents. That is the best way you can utilize your mana. Always save mana for an emergency stun in case you’re in a tight spot or your opponents are channeling a devastating spell on you.
2. Mid game

10-11. Elder Dragon Form
12. Stats
13-15. Dragon Blood
This is THE most important stage of the game. Your success or failure in farming a sacred relic will largely affect your whole game. As such, I will point out some important tips in order to farm up your precious relic.
The first important tip is gaining map control. You absolutely need observer wards placed on the river in order to dodge incoming ganks. Ask your support allies to actively ward the map so that you can safely farm in your lane. Not being able to dodge a gank is horrible and will set you back from that precious relic. Also, if you see 5 missing dots and you’re sort of far in your opponent’s territory, chances are, they’re coming to gank you. So always pay attention to your minimap, it’s better safe than sorry.
Always last hit and deny. You want the creep wave to stay by your side of the map as much as possible so you don’t push in too far. Denying may seem frivolous at this stage of the game, but it is more important than ever to keep the wave at your side so you can farm at the safety of your tower and your base in case you need to fall back. Auto attacking will only push far into your enemy’s territory and you will farm nothing.
Always keep a TP scroll with you. There will always be unexpected cases where you’re suddenly ganked even though you’ve placed wards (your enemy teleporting in, or grabbing an invis rune). In this case, you will need to outsmart your enemies by using the fog of war. When you’re running away, always run by the trees, never run out in the open. That will make it easier for your opponents to see you and see where you’re going. By running alongside the trees, you will be able to abuse the fog of war and possibly juke your opponents. Fog of war also serves as a safe haven for teleporting out of danger. You need two seconds of channeling and being able to squeeze yourself in fog of war and teleporting out will successfully save your life.
NEVER FARM PAST THE RIVER. Farming past the river is pure stupidity. You’re just asking to get ganked by farming past the river. You NEED to play it safely to farm up your relic. This is the main reason why it is crucial to last hit and deny even when you’re free farming. If you sense a gank coming your way even though you’re close to your base, use breathe fire to grab as many creep kills as possible and teleport away.
Use your EDF level 2 for a big creep wave. If the creep wave is relatively close to your side of the base and there are lots of them, turn on EDF, attack a few times, and use breathe fire to grab all the creep kills. This will grant you huge amounts of gold and doing this for roughly 3 creep waves will be more than enough to get you close to that relic. After you’re done with this, immediately fall back to neutrals or your base as you don’t want to get ganked.
So let’s say you screwed up your farming and got ganked many times or you just don’t have the ability to farm up 3,800 gold all at one go. Then now is the time to fall back to the alternative build. Farm up your 3 bracers and go for your BOT. Even though you’re farming for a relatively easier item, the advice I gave above this paragraph still applies so try your best to follow it. Deaths are never good and getting swarmed by a 5 man gank is embarrassing. If you’re going for the SnY route, you’re more at a liberty to gank your opponents more than farming your ass off so try to aim for weak heroes who can go down easily. Your goal with the alternative build is to gank with your allies more often and farm when you can. Follow up with your dragon tail after your allies use their disables and use breathe fire as you’re whacking away. Don’t be afraid of taking some hits; you’re a strength hero with 3 bracers making you tough to take down. Use your EDF if you feel that you need it in a gank and use it to farm after you’re done.
If you’re against an early push team or you’re against opponents who have vastly superior heroes against your team, then the SnY route is the way to go. You don’t want to be farming while your base is being screwed over and you don’t want just boots, 3 circlets, and an ROB while you’re defending. You want to be useful in those situations and hence, you will fall back to the SnY build.
In team battles, you will want to turn on your EDF as being ranged is always better than fighting in melee. Use your stun against a potentially dangerous enemy and use your breathe fire. If you survived that battle with your EDF still going and your HP is in the safe zone, go for the creep waves and farm your ass off.
If you’re being chased, turn on EDF as it boosts your movement speed considerably. It will allow you to run away faster and it lets you juke easier.
3. Late Game
16. Elder Dragon Form
17. Dragon Blood
18-20. Dragon Tail
21-25. Stats
Congratulations if you were able to farm up your radiance. Better luck next time if you failed and went the alternative route. Once you get your radiance, you will become a beast in any team battles or ganks. You are already beefy with your circlets or bracers, stats, and with radiance, your damage output will be enormous. Don’t be afraid to run in and show your leetness as long as your teammates will back you up. You will inevitably draw focus fire as your damage output will be good so that is a plus AS LONG AS YOUR TEAMMATES BACKS YOU UP. If you’re with a team who doesn’t understand the first thing about teamwork, screw them and play safely. If your teammates are good then it is important that you take the brunt and let your team show who’s 1337.
Now here’s when the fun part begins: elder dragon form level 3. When I say EDF level 3 with radiance is a beast, I am making an understatement. Also, when I say EDF level 3 with radiance and heart is monstrous, it is the understatement of the year. Very few heroes will ever hope of surviving you heads on and it will take more than a few disables to take you down. Your high armor along with high HP and high damage output and your slow coupled with your stun completely dominates almost anyone in the game. But, it is important to understand this: don’t ever think of ramboing in by yourself thinking you’re invincible. Wasting your life by taking in focus fire without your teammates taking advantage of it is a huge waste and foolish. You will die a horrible and embarrassing death and it will be an opportune moment for your opponents to push while you’re down. So always try to stay with your teammates.
Your role in team battles is tanking. If you can help it, always stay in front of your teammates so that you draw attention towards yourself. Let your allies safely throw out their disables and attacks while you take in the hits while slowing them with your frost attack and stunning your opponents. Radiance will still deal damage in an AOE even if you’re disabled so that’s a huge plus. You’re one of the better tanks in the game with the right items since you have high HP and armor and you simply can’t be ignored because of EDF and your stun. This will force your opponents to try and kill you or ignore you while you rip them apart. This is the reason why rad/heart is such a strong item set on DK, it lets you deal damage and take hits at the same time. However, if you went the alternative route, then your damage output won’t be as strong as rad/heart, but you will still be hard to ignore as EDF level 3 itself is a very strong skill in the battlefield.
There is one important element that you must understand: animation canceling. The frost attack granted from EDF3 moves very slow. Basically every time you attack a target, immediately right click forward so you move while you attack. This is very easy as you will slow them and you have superior movement speed. Ignoring animation canceling and just auto attacking might make you lose your target by the fog of war or your target might be fast enough to escape your grasp.

I play as JooN- on the scourge side. Mode is RD and it’s your typical TDA game with a mix of some decent people as well as dumb newbs. I don’t start off hot early game against silencer and spectre. Gotta hate silencer’s glaive harassment. However, I proceed to farm all around the map with my 3 bracers. Ended with radiance, heart, BOT, and cuirass. Sold off the ROB and bracers when space became an issue. GG 35.8 armor.
2. Conclusion
Please don’t ask for a good allies/worse enemies section or an items to get after core build because I found those to be frivolous and unnecessary information, especially for DK. If you have any questions, feel free to post it and I’ll try my best to answer. If you have any objections to my build, please read my guide carefully and if you still have the same objection, please state the reason why you think it’s wrong. I hate to read stupid comments that just says something is not right and not offering any evidence or backing it up. Thanks for reading and any constructive criticisms will be appreciated.
