Introduction
My old guide was deleted, so I revamped it and resubmitted it here. Clinkz is one of the best damage dealers in the game, and isn’t handicapped by being a melee hero like many other agility heroes. This guide shows how to maximize his potential for hero killing and carrying your team.

Strengths

  • Searing Arrows are great for lane control and last hitting
  • Wind Walk is a fantastic escaping and ganking skill
  • Great at taking down towers
  • DPS is excellent, better than most other agility heroes
  • Has great move speed with WW

Weaknesses

  • Low HP and strength gain
  • Reliant on items to be powerful
  • Low mana which is compounded by having four active spells

Skill Descriptions

IPB Image Strafe
Fire a large number of arrows in a short time period.
Lasts 10 seconds.
Level 1 - 20% increased attack speed.
Level 2 - 40% increased attack speed.
Level 3 - 60% increased attack speed.
Level 4 - 80% increased attack speed.
Mana Cost: 90
Cooldown: 30
An excellent steroid skill. Unlike Frenzy, you do not take extra damage when it is turned on. All you need in order to take advantage of this skill is to add damage.

IPB ImageSearing Arrows
Increases the damage of the Hero’s attack by adding fire. Bonus damage works on buildings.
Level 1 - 10 bonus damage.
Level 2 - 20 bonus damage.
Level 3 - 30 bonus damage.
Level 4 - 40 bonus damage.
Mana Cost: 8
Cooldown: 4/3/0/0
Thankfully, the cooldown at level 3 has been changed back to zero, making lane control much easier. This is the skill that makes you so dangerous early and mid game. It also does damage to towers, which is very important since taking them down is the main purpose of the game.

IPB ImageWind Walk
Turn invisible for a period of time, increasing movement speed.
Level 1 - 7% increased movement speed, 20 seconds.
Level 2 - 14% increased movement speed, 25 seconds.
Level 3 - 21% increased movement speed, 30 seconds.
Level 4 - 28% increased movement speed, 35 seconds.
Mana Cost: 75
Cooldown: 20
Wind walk is the prototypical “assassin skill”. It allows you to gank heroes and is crucial to your survivability. The movement increase makes it possible to catch heroes that are trying to run away.

IPB ImageDeath Pact
Kills a target friendly unit, returning a percentage of its life.
Level 1 - 55% conversion.
Level 2 - 95% conversion.
Level 3 - 135% conversion.
Mana Cost: 120 / 200 / 280
Cooldown: 20
The mana cost is low enough that you can get it at level 6. Thereafter, I wait until level 16 or 17 to get it.

Explanation of Skill Build

1. Searing is your Bread and Butter skill that makes last hitting and harassing very easy. It MUST be maxed first. It serves the purposes of helping your lane control early game and your DPS in the mid and late game.

2. I get some stats early because you need all three stats very badly because of your low starting HP and mana.

3. Strafe is an awesome steroid skill that makes him the lethal hero that he is. Therefore this skill is needed for the mid game when you get your Javelin’s and MKB.

The 80% IAS increases your DPS tremendously, and allows you to do more damage than spellcasters once you get MKB. Here are the calculations for his DPS at level 15 with a MKB and a Bracer with Strafe turned on:

(82+3+8+40+30+75)*(100+64+80+3+8+15)/170 = 378 DPS
**The bonus damage from MKB is averaged to 30 dmg/hit

Although mathcraft has its limitations, it can often be a good indicator of how much damage an item can give you. At almost 400 DPS you will do more damage than many spellcasters, and can fulfill your role as a damage dealer.

4. More levels of WW aren’t needed until later because you one level is sufficient for survivability in the early and mid game. Once you have damage items, you can level it to chase down heroes.

5. I get one level of Death Pact early so that you can stay in your lane longer. The mana cost is high so I wait until I finish the other skills before getting more levels of it.

  • Boots of Speed

  • 2 Javelins
  • Demon Edge = Monkey King Bar
  • Bracer
  • Ogre Axe
  • Broadsword
  • Black King Bar
  • Buriza-do Kyanon

Explanation of Item Build
This build has been modified a bit to account for the recent changes in version 6.49.

Wraith Bands - Three Wraith Bands give a cheap source of stats and damage. They give Clinkz greater influence in the early/mid game.

Power Treads - With the recent buff to treads, I feel that it is now slightly superior to Travels on Clinkz. Even though he has Strafe, the extra IAS and stats (10 STR) are key to making him stronger earlier in the game. With the way games are getting shorter, Clinkz needs to be stronger earlier to be a viable hero. The days of farm 60 minutes and pwn with Rapier/Aegis are long gone.

Monkey King Bar - I disagree with Beast Pete’s build, as MKB has much greater DPS than Butterfly. With the recent changes, MKB is much easier to build as well. Clinkz needs damage to synergize with Strafe, not more IAS. I can pump out the mathcraft to prove it, but take my word for it when I say MKB has the best DPS as a first item except for Rapier. Even with a Javelin or two, you will be able to start putting the hurt on enemy heroes. Your high IAS works great with the bonus damage.

Black King Bar - After reading Duckcowhybrid’s comments, I’ve decided to replace Heart with this item. Clinkz’ weakness is to disables and combo nukes, which prevent him from windwalking away. BKB will allow you to kill heroes without fear. One reason I get this now is that there is no mana cost to activate it (it cost 150 mana before).

Buriza This is a late game item that increases your DPS exponentially. MKB + Buriza does more damage than a Rapier, so once you get this carrying your team won’t be a problem.

What about these items?

IPB ImageIPB ImageIPB Image Orb Effect Items
Do not get any of these items. Losing the 40 dmg from Searing Arrows is a bad idea. Remember, the Searing Arrows also do a lot of damage to towers and buildings, and that will be key in the late game as well.

IPB Image Eye of Skadi
This is not a bad item at all, especially since the frost stacks with searing arrows. However, this item is freaking expensive. Ultimate Orbs are horrifically expensive for the benefits they give you.

IPB Image Butterfly
To me, this item is only an option when facing permabashers. Clinkz doesn’t need more IAS, and Butterfly is too expensive for the amount of damage it gives. It has no synergy with his skills, unlike MKB and Buriza whose bonus damage is amplified by IAS. Evasion is not that great since your biggest worry is spells being focused on you, not physical damage.

IPB Image Hand of Midas
This item goes against my plan to make Clinkz as useful as possible in the midgame. Clinkz is not a bad farmer, either, and cannot afford the delay that this item gives him in becoming effective. Lastly, he doesn’t really need the attack speed due to strafe.

IPB Image Heart of Tarrasque
This is a great late game item for Clinkz. I would get this instead of BKB in pubs or if they don’t have many disablers.

Strategy and Game Walkthrough

EARLY GAME - Levels 1-10

Main Goal: Farm and Control your lane
Clinkz should lane with a partner, due to his low HP. However, if they don’t have very good harassing heroes, you might as well take solo. Last hit with your searing arrows and be careful not to take too much damage from nukes. Use Death Pact if you need to. DO NOT DIE or get sent back to the fountain. Use observer wards if needed, as a couple of disablers can gank you easily. Always keep an eye on your minimap for missing heroes. In fact, its not a bad idea to always position yourself in the lane so you are closer to the edge of the map. This is so that enemies can’t disable you while hiding in the trees.

Harass with your searing arrows (manual cast so you don’t get hit by creeps), being merciless if they are melee heroes. Once you have level 3 Searing Arrows, you can use what is called “animation-canceling”. This is done by manually casting a Searing Arrow, then immediately moving forward toward the enemy hero by right clicking on the ground. Right after the move command, manual cast another Searing Arrow. This will cause Clinkz to skip the rest of his animation of firing his arrow and allow him to fire another Searing Arrow as soon as possible. By doing this you can usually chase him back to his tower and perhaps make him go to his fountain.

MID GAME - Levels 11-16

Main Goal: Farm until MKB, then gank/fight
Continue to stay in your lane and farm your Monkey King Bar. After you have MKB, you can start ganking lone heroes in other lanes, preferably with a disabler teammate. To do this, move behind them in wind walk and try to stand where they are most likely to run. Wait until your windwalk is finished cooling down, set searing arrows to autocast, and strafe and start attacking. If you want to gank a disabler or a high HP hero, make sure to work with your teammates. Just move behind them with WW when they are farming across from your ally, and usually even without saying anything your teammate will know to engage them. The two of you working together will destroy them easily because the enemy will not be able to disable both of you.

Keep ganking in the manner above until the enemy heroes start to stick together or place some wards. Team battles will also begin, usually with a push by either side for the middle tower. Before the battle begins, wind walk so that you will be able to wind walk again during the fighting if you need to. Let your teammates engage them first, then strafe and attack their most dangerous heroes. This is the order you should attack them in:

- Crazy AOE or channeling INT heroes (MKB’s mini-stun will cancel channeling)
- Powerful nuking heroes
- Powerful DPS heroes

In team battles, you should enter the battle after it has already begun. Clinkz is not a good initiator, he is a finisher. In general, do not focus high HP heroes, as your objective is to eliminate one key hero of their team quickly. In 1v1 or 2v2 battles, position yourself behind the enemy. In team battles, stay behind your tanks so that you won’t be focused as easily. Once you get BKB, you can be more free with your positioning by hitting the enemy from the side and back again.

You can use Death Pact on a creep during a battle to prolong your damage dealing. Otherwise you may have to WW and hightail it out of there when your HP gets low.

Make sure to farm creeps and neutral camps between team battles and when there is no one to gank. By level 15 or so you will be able to farm the ancients so that you can get more gold between battles. Another good idea is to place an observer ward at their ancient creeps, so that you can easily gank them while they are trying to farm.

LATE GAME - Levels 17-25

Main Goal: Push for the win
By this time, you should have a lot of damage items will start to become a prime target. If your team is doing well, make sure to push and knock down base towers and raxes using your strafe and searing arrows. If backdooring is allowed, its not a bad idea to do it when the other team is pushing your lanes (but not at your base). Your goal should be to win the game before any other DPS heroes get strong enough to take you on.

Conclusion

With the demise of Aegis Rapier, I believe this is now the best way to build Clinkz. He is a fun hero, as long as you can get MKB in a reasonable amount of time.
